    Aslam Rahi M.A. wrote a great Urdu book called Gilgamesh in 1991.

    It’s about the strong king Gilgamesh from the ancient Uruk around 2500 BCE. Gilgamesh is an authoritarian ruler but is too harsh on his people.

    The gods send Enkidu, a wild warrior, to teach Gilgamesh a lesson. At first, Gilgamesh beats Enkidu in a fight.

    But soon, they become close like brothers. This friendship makes Gilgamesh kinder and wiser.

    Together, Gilgamesh and Enkidu go on a dangerous trip to the Cedar Forest. They fight a scary monster, Humbaba, and win.

    But Enkidu gets poorly hurt and dies. Gilgamesh feels very sad and starts to think about life and power differently.

    The book shows Gilgamesh’s deep sadness very well. He hates death for taking Enkidu away.

    Then, he searches for a way to live forever. In the end, Gilgamesh learns what it means to be human.
